Mastering the art of PowerPoint presentations not only gives you the confidence to stand before an audience but also puts you in a position to fetch some good grades. Here is what you need to do when presenting your work.

Studies show that the fear of public speaking borders on the fear for death. While it is true that there nothing much you can do to melt away the anxiety, the best place to start is always making a better presentation. Becoming a competent rather than just a confident speaker should always be the ultimate aim of any student who is faced with many presentations. However, this requires a lot of practice but there are a few things that you can do:

Make use of the 10-20-30 rule; this rule stipulates that any PowerPoint presentation should have no more than 10 slides, last no longer than 20 minutes and be of no less than 30 point font.

 The rule holds that even if the ideas you are presenting in your academic paper will instantly change the world you still need to spell out the most important points within a few minutes, with as few slides as possible and with the fewest words possible per slide.

Be entertaining; your audience will not just be expecting you to inform them, you also have to entertain them by appealing to their emotions. Recital of dry facts without punctuating them with some humor will easily turn off the audience.

Slow down; inexperienced and nervous speakers tend to talk way too fast. It is advisable to make a conscious effort of slowing down and observe pauses while you are speaking.

Maintain eye contact; try and maintain eye contact with everyone in the audience.

Do not just focus on the panelists since the rest of the audience is just as interested in what you are saying as the panelists.

Don't read; the information on the slides should be cues to what you are supposed to say. Reading the information word by word shows that you have not mastered what you were supposed to present.

Make use of stories: if the presentation is likely to be quite long you can summarize some of the concepts using anecdotes or short stories.
