People are constantly asking about Facebook. Do I need it? Do I have to? What is so great about it?

Well if you are an affiliate marketer you might be interested to know that Facebook has over a half a billion users. That isn't a typo, I MEANT to say billion. That is a ridiculous number of potential eyeballs to get your offer in front of.

One of the best ways to find potential leads is with Facebook Ads. Used properly, Facebook ads can be a great way to market your offers, affiliate or not.

What are Facebook Ads?

In basic terms, Facebook Ads are a form of pay per click advertising. When you are in Facebook you can usually find the ads on the right hand side of things like your profile or news feed.

Anyone can take advantage of these ads and the process really isn't too difficult. You build your ads using the Facebook Ad editor.

Then you choose who you want to target and how much you want to spend. If you are used to online pay per click ads like Google Adwords, then you are familiar with the general concept.

What Are The Benefits?

Do you mean besides the fact you can tap into half a billion users?

Besides that interesting fact, the real benefit of Facebook ads are not how many people you can reach, but how much you can target and focus your ads. Facebook offers unparalleled demographic targeting. You can choose exactly who sees your ads.

You can filter by:

* Age * Gender * Location * Interests * Facebook Connections (i.e. Pages they belong to) * Sexual Preference * Relationship Status * Education * Work Places

See the kind of targeting you can do? It is very intense. If you had a niche offering, you could limit that offer to men aged 20-34 who are interested in sports and work in a car factory.

That is important because for the most part you will be paying per click. By properly targeting your key demographics you can ensure that only people potentially interested in your offer will click the ad.

Placing An Ad

Placing an ad is pretty straight forward. You build the ad, with a bit of text and an image. Always use an image! Then you target whatever market you want.

Once you have chosen your targeting you have to choose your budget. I suggest setting your daily budget fairly low to start, so you can get a feel for how the ads work and get an idea of your ROI (return on investment). I also suggest you choose Pay Per Click payments because in general, impression based ads aren't great for the affiliate market. If you choose impressions, your ad will be shown a certain amount of times. There is no guarantee that anyone will click them. If you properly target your ads, then PPC is the more economical way to go.

Once done, submit your ad and you will have to wait for approval. Once approved your ad will go live.

One thing you should also do is check out Facebook Ad Guidelines, they have a lot of rules, and your ad can be denied if it breaks them. If you don't think your ad broke any rules, but it gets denied then reapply! Facebook ads are approved by real people, and people make mistakes. Waiting a couple hours and getting your ad in front of a new pair of eyes may be all you need to do to get your ad approved.

Facebook ads are definitely worthwhile for a number of people. If you want to find out if your website/niche is one of those, then run a couple test campaigns and check out your results. If you notice you are getting leads and conversions you can ramp up advertising efforts later. Also make sure you try a couple different ads and target demographics. This way you will know what works and what doesn't.
