If you invest a small amount, you will start making money back. Just having a website doesn't tell me enough information. The rule still is, invest small so you can get back that return quickly. A service business that has affiliate marketing can be lucrative. A product business is easier to provide in some ways than a service business. If you like the product and the price, you buy it. In a service business you have to show your portfolio and how others were happy with what service you provide. Good luck!

Although $ 1000 is realistic, it takes time. I currently make around $ 5000 but it took several years to get there. Obviously you have the skills to create a website and you have the time. That's a huge plus. But there is marketing, SEO and ultimately patience ahead of you. Choose keywords wisely and look for products with a decent payout. It is possible, but expect to work hard at it, especially in the very beginning stages.
At last years Podcamp I noticed a few speakers briefly mentioned how, bloggers could earn extra money from blogging - they only mentioned earning a few hundred dollars per year. I'd like to conduct a session educating people how with blogging they can earn a substantial income that will pay the bills and possibly more, and in rare cases earn a six figure income. Affiliate marketing is is probably the fastest growing multi billion dollar industry on the internet today. More people are getting involved at an accelerated pace. The rewards are well worth the efforts.
But, affiliate marketing has a learning curve. In the early stages of the learning process, it would be advisable to secure the support of a mentor or other skilled individuals who have been successful in this area. With discipline and perseverance, one can eventually become adept and successful in this area.
There are some important points to consider during the beginning phases of this activity:
1) Get your home office or comfortable workspace set up. You should have an up-to-date computer, fast internet access, printers and other necessary equipment.
2) You should have some basic knowledge of doing business and trading online.
This knowledge can be acquired through mentors, and professionals with experience in this area. Courses are much more easily available now which will help you learn the fundamentals of the business.3) Set realistic goals. Don't expect to generate $ 1,000,000 the first year. A range of $ 500-1,000 monthly is much more realistic initially. The opportunities are increasing; the choice of merchant programs and the resources needed to evaluate them have improved remarkably in the last few years.
How do you evaluate affiliate merchant programs? Here are some factors to consider:
Carefully examine the commission structure. The best programs should give at least 40%-50% commission on a sale. The dollar amount should be at least $ 25-30. These amounts should be sufficient to cover advertising costs and realize a profit.
Is the merchant or product popular? You can check at Alexa.com and verify the traffic ranking of the merchant site.
Under 100,000 is ideal. Greater than 500,000 should be a caveat. Carefully review the affiliate agreement. Payment timelines should be specified, either weekly or monthly.
Does the merchant have high quality products and promotional materials? The website should look attractive; the landing pages should well written and engaging Would you buy from this merchant after reading through the sales copy? The answer is important!!
Be sure to have affiliate links set up with your advertisements. The tracking "cookies" will enable the merchant to verify the customer source and award you proper credit(s) on the ensuing sales.
It would also be advisable, as your experience increases, to set up your own landing pages for the merchant's products. With some luck, you may find that your sales may increase considerably.
