I've noticed that on earnings per click (EPC) the simple text link is always highest, and sometimes the bigger graphics show zero earnings. This is totally counter intuitive to me. Banner blindness really became a problem at one time, I have heard from media buy advertisers that banners have rebounded a bit, some times a simple text message in a graphic are does better than a fancy banner, but not always. I believe it's the text links in the context of a related review or how to article that get the good epc, unfortunately you might only be able to present them that way on your own sites, not in bought ad space.

In a word, yes. Text links are much better for search engine rankings but they are also 'less obvious' as adverts. If you can write a good article with text links throughout, you are much more likely to convert than an obvious advert. People know what they are getting when they decide whether to click a banner ad.
